Subject: Autry National Center's Exhibits and Collections staff install the new Gene Autry case for the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award

Date: Monday, March 30, 2009

Photographer: Jeffrey Richardson, Autry National Center Assistant Curator of Film & Popular Culture

Comments: Gene Autry's musical career began in 1929 as the "Oklahoma Yodeling Cowboy" on radio station KVOO in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Eighty years later America's Favorite Singing Cowboy was honored with the Recording Academy's Lifetime Achievement Award. This prestigious award recognizes a select few performers who, during their lifetimes, have made creative contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of recording.

Mrs. Autry and Gene Autry Entertainment agreed that Gene's fans and music enthusiasts would enjoy seeing this award and it is now on display at the Autry National Center in a special cameo exhibit.

In addition to the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences Lifetime Achievement Award 2009 for Gene Autry (the Grammy Award) the case contains a variety of items from Gene's recording and music career:

Gene Autry's Famous Cowboy Songs and Mountain Ballads, Book No. 2 Songbook, 1934
Git Along Little Dogies movie poster, 1937
Gene Autry's Western Classics record set, 1947
"Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer" / "If It Doesn't Snow on Christmas" record, circa 1949
"Jingle, Jangle, Jingle"/ "I'm a Cow Poke Pokin' Along" record, circa 1950
The Art of Writing Songs and How to Play a Guitar by Gene Autry Booklet 1933
On the Stage in Person: Gene Autry Personal appearance poster 1939
Radio Guide, Vol. 9, No. 5, Magazine November 17, 1939

This photo album provides a behind the scenes look at how the  exhibit was installed by the Museum's Collections Management, Conservation, Curatorial, and Exhibits departments. We hope you can visit the Autry Museum and see this exhibit in person.
