Brief Synopsis:

As a special investigator for an express company, Gene has to turn outlaw to find stolen money.

Detailed Synopsis:
Disguised as an outlaw, Gene Autry holds up a stagecoach, robbing Slinger, a dubious character, and Yvette Wilson, a flashy but attractive girl. To avert suspicion, Gene also takes a chiming watch from his friend Sagebrush. Later in Canyon City, Gene and Sagebrush try to convince Slinger, who has just been discharged from the penitentiary, that they are outlaws. To make it even more convincing, Gene gets into a fight and has himself arrested by Sheriff Tom Lash. Gene, of course, is really a special agent investigating a ten-year-old robbery. Slinger is the only known living member of the gang who knows where the stolen money is buried. The sheriff, a secret member of the gang, promises to aid Gene, but contacts Slinger. With Sagebrush’s help, Gene rescues Slinger from attack, wins his confidence, and learns the truth about the sheriff. Sagebrush must lock up Yvette when she discovers he and Gene are investigators. When Gene sends Sagebrush with blasting powder to Slinger, Yvette warns the sheriff, who goes after Slinger, killing him and shooting Sagebrush. Gene manages to release himself from jail in time to race out and capture the sheriff.
