2005 Dinner and a Movie at the Autry National Center: Blue Canadian Rockies

The Autry National Center and Gene Autry Entertainment present Dinner and a Movie every Thursday night in July. The third evening featured Blue Canadian Rockies.

Our third Dinner and a Movie night at the Autry National Center was a fun family event with delicious food, a special museum tour-talk, and the first ever screening of the digitally restored Gene Autry feature film Blue Canadian Rockies in the museum’s Wells Fargo Theater.
The very warm evening began once again with some of the tastiest BBQ you’ve ever dined on at a museum! Folks enjoyed grilled corn on the cob, BBQ chicken and ribs, Caesar Salad, and a dessert choice of a luscious lemon bar or scrumptious brownie. And a beverage was also included in the meal. The evening’s activities continued with a special tour in two Galleries with two Curators. Autry Museum Senior Curator Michael Duchemin gave a talk in the Community Gallery on Canadian immigrants, and as an added bonus, the Museum’s Curatorial Assistant for Arms and Armor, Julia Bourbois, spoke about guns in the Colt Gallery.
The Gene Autry Raffle Drawing, with Gene Autry merchandise generously donated by the Autry Museum Store, continues to be very popular! Six winners were drawn by Karla Buhlman before the movie and six more winners where drawn after the movie in the Museum Store. The winners were all very excited and ranged in age from grade school to grandpa. A “Big Raffle Prize” of fabulous Gene Autry items valued at $275 will be given away on our last screening on July 28th.
After Karla drew the six Raffle winners, she talked about Gene Autry in 1952. At the age of 45, Gene Autry was making movies, records, television shows, radio shows and touring twice a year to towns across America. And his business holdings were doing quite well, too. It is quite amazing to think of how much the Cowboy did in one year without the assistance of computers, cell phones, or email! After briefing the eager audience on the movie, we all enjoyed the digital presentation of Gene Autry in Blue Canadian Rockies. Big Bear Lake and the San Bernadino Mountains did a fine job of “acting” like the Canadian Rockies.
Soon after the movie, folks gathered in the Museum Store to see who won the next six Gene Autry Gift Bags, ask Karla their Gene Autry questions, and, of course, shop for wonderful items in the store. A good time was had by all and the majority of folks said they would be back next week.
