Our first Dinner and a Movie night at the Autry National Center was a fun family event with delicious food, a special museum tour-talk, and the first ever screening of the digitally restored Gene Autry feature film Rovin’ Tumbleweeds in the museum’s Wells Fargo Theater.

The beautiful evening began with some of the tastiest BBQ you’ll ever dine on at a museum! Folks enjoyed grilled corn on the cob, BBQ chicken and ribs, Caesar Salad, and a dessert choice of a luscious lemon bar or scrumptious brownie. And a beverage was also included in the meal. The evening’s activities continued with a special gallery tour related to the night’s movie by Autry Museum Senior Curator Michael Duchemin.

Everyone was encouraged to enter the Gene Autry Raffle Drawing, with Gene Autry merchandise generously donated by the Autry Museum Store. Six winners were drawn by Karla Buhlman before the movie and six more winners where drawn after the movie in the Museum Store. A “Big Raffle Prize” of fabulous Gene Autry items valued at $275 will be given away on our last screening on July 28th.

After Karla drew the six Raffle winners, she gave a talk on Gene Autry Entertainment and their restoration of Gene Autry’s 89 feature films. She also spoke on upcoming projects between now and the Gene Autry Centennial in 2007. After briefing the eager audience on the movie, we all enjoyed the digital presentation of Gene Autry in Rovin’ Tumbleweeds. What fun it was to see the movie with a big group of friends who all laughed and cheered together as Gene fought floods, sang songs, and did his best to safe the day!

Soon after the movie folks gathered in the Museum Store to see who won the next six Gene Autry Gift Bags, ask Karla their Gene Autry questions, and of course shop for wonderful items in the store. A good time was had by all and the majority of folks said they would be back next week.

Do come join us for the next Dinner and A Movie night when we screen Home on the Prairie. We’ve got everything you need for a fun evening with the family: free parking, tasty food, air conditioned venue, and an entertaining Gene Autry movie!
