The second evening of the Dinner and a Movie series at the Autry National Center was a huge success. Gene Autry’s World War II themed film In Old Monterey was digitally presented in the museum’s Wells Fargo Theater.

The chefs from the museum's Golden Spur Café provided a barbeque dinner that shouted "Summertime" when you looked at it and your tummy hollered "Delicious!" when you ate it. Folks enjoyed barbequed chicken and ribs, perfect potato salad, green salad, cornbread, a cool beverage, and a big tasty cookie. The evening’s activities continued with a special tour in the Museum that related to the night’s film. Senior Curator Michael Duchemin spoke about ranch life and made sure to point out the special artifacts donated by Gene Autry such as the 1912 truck. The special tour is given twice in the evening, allowing everyone the chance to enjoy their dinner and catch the tour. It was another warm Southern California evening and the air conditioned galleries were very refreshing!

At 7:15PM we all gathered in the Wells Fargo Theater for the Gene Autry Raffle Drawing. Gene Autry Entertainment Vice President Karla Buhlman and Michael Duchemin awarded three prizes courtesy of the Autry Museum Store. Then it was time for the pre-show lecture. Michael shared the "Big Picture" information on America’s preparation for war in 1939 and Gene’s Personal Appearance Tours for that year to the New York World’s Fair and the British Isles. Karla Buhlman, the Vice President of Gene Autry Entertainment, then had a surprise for the audience: The 1939 theater promo of Gene Autry announcing his British Isles Tour. It was a big hit! After the five minute promo, Karla shared the trivia and information directly related to the film and we all enjoyed the digital presentation of the fully restored film In Old Monterey.

Immediately after the movie everyone headed to the Museum Store for two more raffle prizes and time for "Q & A" on Gene Autry with Michael and Karla. Folks also took advantage of the Museum Store's Marvelous Movie Sale and everyone left with a smile.

We had a great crowd for this film and expect to see everyone again next week for South of the Border. You can be sure that we’ve got another mouth-watering dinner planned and more fun filled Gene Autry information to share. Everything you need for a fun evening with the family is at the Autry Museum for Dinner and a Movie: free parking, tasty food, an air conditioned venue, and an entertaining Gene Autry movie!
