Last year’s Dinner and a Movie event at the Autry National Center was so much fun that we had to do it again this year. Our first film of the series was Mexicali Rose digitally presented in the museum’s Wells Fargo Theater.

Like the previous Dinner and a Movie nights, the evening began with a tasty meal from the museum’s Golden Spur Café. Folks enjoyed a delicious Mexican feast of tacos, beans, rice, green salad, a cool beverage, and delectable desserts. The activities continued with a special tour in the Museum that related to the night’s film. Senior Curator Michael Duchemin spoke about the Mexican charros and pre-war radio broadcast of Gene Autry. The special tour is given twice in the evening, allowing everyone the chance to enjoy their dinner and catch the tour. Michael is well versed in all things Gene Autry as he is the curator for next year’s Gene Autry Centennial exhibit at the Museum.

At 7:15PM we all gathered in the Wells Fargo Theater for the Gene Autry Raffle Drawing. Gene Autry Entertainment Vice President Karla Buhlman with the help of Michael Duchemin awarded four prizes courtesy of the Autry Museum Store. Then it was time for the pre-show lecture. It all began with Michael sharing the “Big Picture” information on Gene Autry during this pre-war period and the Cowboy’s importance and influence with the American public. Then Karla spoke on the trivia and information directly related to the film. After that, we all enjoyed the digital presentation of the fully restored film Mexicali Rose.

Immediately after the movie everyone headed for the Museum Store for two more raffle prizes and time for "Q & A" on Gene Autry with Michael and Karla. Folks also took advantage of the Museum Store’s Marvelous Movie Sale and everyone left with a smile.

So many friends from last year joined us for the evening and we met some swell new friends, too. We hope that you can come to the next Dinner and a Movie night when we will screen In Old Monterey. We’ve got everything you need for a fun evening with the family: free parking, tasty food, an air conditioned venue, and an entertaining Gene Autry movie!
