Our second film of the Autry National Center's Dinner and a Movie event was Gold Mine in the Sky and the Southern California evening was perfect for this fun family event.

The museum's Golden Spur Café started things out with another delicious meal. Guest could choose from a quarter BBQ chicken or BBQ Tri-Tip, caramelized onion mashed potatoes, Tex Mex Caesar salad, garlic bread, apple pie with whipped cream and a beverage. Our vegetarian guests could replace the entrée with a vegetable torte. As with last week, folks could dine in the courtyard or inside the café.

After the meal, it was time for a special gallery tour with the Autry's Senior Curator, Michael Duchemin. This time, the tour was in the Cowboy Gallery where Michael discussed ranching, which was part of the movie's plot. If Michael seemed a little bit tired it was because he and the museum's staff had been working overtime on the installation of the new exhibit Gene Autry and the Twentieth-Century West: The Centennial Exhibition 1907 – 2007. The count down to the exhibit's opening is on!

At 7:15PM we all gathered in the Wells Fargo Theater for the pre-show lecture. It all began with Michael, whom Karla likes to refer to as our "Cowboy Scholar," sharing the "Big Picture" information and additional details on Gene Autry. Then Karla spoke on the trivia and information directly related to the film. After that, we all enjoyed the digital presentation of the fully restored film Goldmine in the Sky.

Immediately after the movie everyone headed for the Museum Store for the Gene Autry Raffle Drawing. Two prizes were provided courtesy of the Autry Museum Store. Then it was time for "Q & A" on Gene Autry with Michael and Karla. Folks also took advantage of the Museum Store's Marvelous Movie Sale and were reminded to come back next week for the special Members' Preview of the Gene Autry exhibit.

Yes, it was another wonderful family event at the Autry! The next and final Dinner and a Movie will be on June 28th when we'll screen Gene's Columbia Pictures hit Riders in the Sky. Please join us for free parking, tasty food, an air conditioned venue, and an entertaining Gene Autry movie!
