Synopsis:
When Mesa City announces plans to build an aqueduct from the river bordering an Indian reservation, both the Indians and the ranchers in the valley protest, as their land will be useless when the aqueduct drains the river. Rancher Gene Autry makes a deal with the Mesa City officials - the Indians will be given better land in return for their reservation and the ranchers will be paid a high price for their holdings. Local bankers Charlie Mason and his son, Matt, are opposed to the deal, for it will enable the ranchers to pay off their debts and prevent the Masons from foreclosing on their land. The Indians are also reluctant to leave the land of their ancestors, but Gene finally convinces them. To stall the project, Mason seizes schoolteacher Carol Taylor's father's land. Taylor has two days to pay, and Gene and the other ranchers pool their cattle to save Taylor and themselves from financial ruin. The Indians, stirred up by Matt Mason, try to stampede the cattle drive. The herd is safely brought to market and Mason is paid. The Indians are embittered at Gene, but Carol convinces them of his honesty and Matt's treachery. Gene captures Matt, who murdered Gene's friend Jeff Henry. Jeff's widow is appointed teacher of the new Indian school after Carol resigns. Gene, on Champion, rides off with Carol.
The Last Round-Up is Gene's first film with Columbia Pictures and the first "Gene Autry Production."
