When he was a young man, Gene received an offer from a professional baseball team to become a player. Gene turned down the offer because it would have meant a fifty-dollar-a-month pay cut from his telegrapher's job.

Gene Autry's April 21, 1946 performance of "No Letter Today" was broadcast live from WBBM in Chicago, Illinois and backed by Carl Cotner's Orchestra.

When Gene Autry went into the Army Air Corp in 1942 to serve his country during WWII, his weekly "Melody Ranch" radio show became the "Sgt. Gene Autry Show." But when Gene had to fly planes during the war and after that tour the South Pacific with the USO, his radio show was off the air. When he returned to civilian life and his entertainment career in Autumn of 1945, the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company had limited radio time for the Singing Cowboy. Gene Autry's "Melody Ranch" Radio Show still aired on Sunday's but in an abbreviated 15 minute format introduced as "another of those pleasant Sunday afternoon ranch-country get-togethers with America's favorite cowboy, Gene Autry." The 15 minute shows aired weekly starting on Sept 23, 1945 and then on June 16, 1946 Gene Autry's "Melody Ranch" radio show returned to its full 30 minute format.
