Brief Synopsis:

Gene and Pat unmask an unexpected bandit leader when they investigate recent stagecoach robberies.

Detailed Synopsis:

Gene Autry and town supervisors have a meeting about road improvement where Henry Harlow, owner of a worthless ranch, offers the money necessary to complete the roadwork. Due to past stagecoach holdups, they plan to take the money to the county seat in a buckboard while Gene accompanies the stage to throw off possible attack. During the drive, Gene hears gunfire and sees in the distance a bandit chasing and firing at the buckboard. The wagon turns over, and the sheriff is knocked unconscious. As prearranged, Harlow gives the gold sacks to the bandit, who gets away. Gene chases him, but loses the trail when the bandit hides the sacks in a culvert. During the hunt, Gene stumbles upon the hideout and finds a letter addressed to Harlow. The bandit returns and a terrific fight takes place, ending when Gene ties up the bandit. Later, the sheriff and Harlow discuss the holdup when Gene enters. He lets Harlow think that the bandit is in jail and will talk. Harlow leaves, and Gene and Pat Buttram trail him to the culvert, catching him by surprise. The bandit and another heavy arrive and shoot Harlow and then try to ambush Gene. Pat shoots just in time to save him. The bags of money turn out to be phony because Gene suspected Harlow and deposited the gold earlier, laying a trap to catch him.
