Brief Synopsis:
In a plot to uncover a counterfeiting ring, Gene and Pat pretend to be bitter enemies.
Detailed Synopsis:
A counterfeiting gang, operating in Red Canyon, distributes spurious banknotes through one of its members, the local bank teller. Short-term visitors to town put their money in the bank for safekeeping; when they draw it out, the teller gives them excellent counterfeit bills instead. George Elkhart, owner of the Red Canyon hotel, is the head of the gang. Due to attempted stagecoach holdups (perpetrated deliberately by Elkhart’s men to scare incoming visitors), Elkhart has no difficulty convincing frightened newcomers that the bank is the best place for their cash. Enlisted by a Washington Federal agent to track down the counterfeiters, Gene Autry and Pat Buttram pretend to have ended their friendship and become enemies. When Gene gets too close to the counterfeiters for Elkhart’s comfort, Elkhart tries to have Gene assassinated. Failing in this, he makes a desperate move, hiring Gene’s new enemy, Pat Buttram, to do the job. Elkhart has unwittingly exposed himself, but to get the necessary evidence to connect him with the gang hiding in the hills, Gene sets a trap, bringing both Elkhart and the mob to justice.
