Sheriff Gene Autry lets a young ranch owner, who is suspected of horse stealing, escape from jail.
Detailed Synopsis:
When valuable horses from Kenmore's ranch are rustled by Hutch Logan and his gang, suspicion falls on young Ted Doyle, who, with his mother, owns a small ranch near Santa Rosa. The Doyles were run out of New Mexico for being too friendly with unsavory characters, and now their neighboring ranchers demand that Sheriff Gene Autry arrest Ted. Gene does so, but later deliberately allows Ted to escape from jail, believing that he is fundamentally honest and will help catch the Logan gang. Ted, embittered by his bad luck, attempts to run off horses belonging to his neighbors, the Blairs. Libby Blair catches Ted in the act and persuades him not to undertake a career of crime. Touched by her belief in him, Ted agrees; but Libby's father, finding him on his range, shoots and wounds Ted. Meanwhile, Hutch and his gang trick Gene's foreman Sagebrush into leaving Gene's horses unguarded for a time, allowing Hutch to steal them and to leave evidence convicting Ted. Gene and Sagebrush arrive at the Doyles just in time to save Ted from being strung-up and to capture the real criminals.
