Brief Synopsis:

Gene discovers that the town gossip is far more dangerous than he seems.

Detailed Synopsis:

Working for the Marshal, Gene Autry and Pat Buttram are after Mack Healy's gang and consult town gossip Nate Tully about their whereabouts. He claims that he does not know, but he is actually the gang's ringleader. Gene then decides to consult Grandpa Dekker, who hasn't been the same since being hit over the head by claim jumpers, but who knows the hills and may have some advice as to where the gang is hiding. Pat complains because his feet hurt. Grandpa "captures" Gene and Pat thinking they are claim jumpers, but Ronnie, his nine-year-old grandson, lets them escape. Gene then decides to take a look at Grandpa's mine and almost gets a knife in him from one of the members of the Healy Gang, who was warned that Gene is pursuing the gang by Tully. Taking up the outlaw's trail, Gene discovers the gang robbing old Enoch Lesser, and they escape in the direction of Grandpa's mine. Using assumed names, the gang has fooled Grandpa and Ronnie and has been hiding out there. The boy's yell saves Gene from a bullet in the back, but they are captured by the outlaws and tied up in the kitchen. Grandpa frees his grandson and Gene and the battle is on. During the fight, Grandpa is knocked unconscious, and Gene is again captured. Tully, Healy, and the rest of the gang's victory is short-lived however, for Pat arrives in time and the outlaws are captured. The blow on the head restores Grandpa to his right senses, the mine proves to be rich in copper, and Grandpa and Ronnie's future is secured. It also turns out Pat actually had Gene's boots on, which Gene knew, so that Pat would unknowingly break them in.
