Gene Autry Recaptures the
"Old West" in an Old Cowboy Move Town
November 27, 1953
The East has its Williamsburg, Va., restored to mirror the U. S. of Colonial times; now, the other end of the land is coming up with its own counterpart. Gene Autry, star of CBS Television's "Gene Autry Show," is recapturing some of the history and legend of the "Old West" in a cowboy movie town outside Newhall, Calif.
Once the setting for such hard-riding movie heroes as Buck Jones and Johnny Mack Brown, the 100-acre site is being fashioned into a western village of bygone days.
Autry bought the property, located in the San Fernando Valley some 25 miles from the movie capital's Hollywood and Vine, about six months ago. He expects to open it the middle of next year as a museum town, with a dude ranch adjoining.
Gene plans to shift the equipment and stables from his Melody Ranch, in the lower part of the valley, to the new site. Starting in February, he'll use it for his CBS Television shows.
The "Gene Autry Show," (CBS Television, Tuesdays, 8:00-8:30 PM, EST), is sponsored by Wm. Wrigley, Jr., Co., represented by Ruthrauff & Ryan, Inc.
